Training Weekends

This is a WSRA/WTSF Development funded initiative, run one day a month by volunteers to identify Welsh shooting athletes who wish to improve their skills. The long turn aim is to feed talented athletes into the WTSF High Development system. Unless specified, all events will take place at Tondu TSC ranges.

We will assess current abilities, provide training and exercises and generally give help and advice on ways of improving and developing in the sport. Commitment to attend ALL sessions is expected.

There is no individual facility cost involved but athletes are expected to source and supply their own ammunition and refreshments. Range and target hire are paid for from WTSF/WSRA/Welsh Government development funding. The current sessions are scheduled to run from March to November when outside training becomes impractical.

Those attending should have their own, or be able to borrow, all equipment necessary to be able to take part. As a medium-term goal, athletes should aim to get their own Firearms Certificates, rifles and shooting clothing so as to be independent from Clubs, Schools, Colleges and Cadet Units. The reason for this is that attendees will be encouraged, wherever age and logistics permit, to independently plan and organise entry to Club, County, Regional and National competitions as part of their development. Should they show suitable talent to advance further through the system then independence from outside bodies as far as equipment is concerned will be vital.

The ultimate aim is to identify and improve small-bore rifle shooting athletes in Wales and guide those with the talent and personal ambition towards International representation, so the emphasis will always be on ISSF regulated events, rules and equipment. For under 21’s, the sessions form the basis for selection for the Junior International at Bisley

It is expected that these Talent ID sessions will be development based so Club Instructors and coaches should already have established basic levels of safety, range etiquette and an understanding of the prone position. A basic understanding of equipment care and how things work will be beneficial. Athletes should know how to adjust their sights, be able to group shots and have a grasp of basic techniques of breathing and trigger release. What these sessions are not, are an alternative to ‘in house’ novice instruction which is the responsibility of home Club instructors.

Anyone interested is encouraged to register their interest and keep WSRA informed of their progress at their home Club and as space becomes available, we will get in touch.
